Before the first choice
With the owner’s permission, you spend an autumn evening recording the history of a closed Northumberland boarding house. The electricity works; the front door opens; nobody has to stay. Yet in one upstairs room your voices seem to stop short of the walls, and an empty chair gives a soft creak before anyone sits down.
